Bharti Airtel announced on Monday that it is reallocating its mid-band spectrum to handle the increasing demand for 5G services. The company is repurposing the 1800, 2100, and 2300 MHz bands nationwide to enhance 5G coverage.
The goal of this spectrum re-farming is to offer faster browsing speeds and better indoor coverage for customers. As data usage grows, Airtel is speeding up these efforts to provide an excellent 5G experience.
Randeep Sekhon, Airtel’s CTO, stated, “As more customers switch to our 5G services, we are repurposing our mid-band spectrum previously used for 4G. This prepares us to launch Stand-alone technology, making Airtel the first network in India to operate in both stand-alone and non-standalone modes, delivering the best experience in the market.”
Airtel has tested switching between standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes on its 5G network in areas like Rewari, Chennai, and Bhubaneswar, with positive results.
This flexibility will allow Airtel to introduce new applications, services, and solutions through open APIs, differentiated connectivity, and service-based architecture. In partnership with smartphone manufacturers, Airtel will implement combined NSA and SA binaries with carrier aggregation, further improving the 5G experience.
