Microsoft users worldwide, including banks, experienced major outages on Friday. This happened hours after Microsoft said it was working to fix an issue affecting access to its Microsoft 365 apps and services.
In Australia, bank services were disrupted as systems went offline. New Zealand banks also reported being offline. Australia’s largest bank, Commonwealth Bank, said some customers couldn’t transfer money because of the outage.
Other Australian banks affected included National Australia Bank (NAB) and Bendigo. Social media users reported trouble accessing financial institutions like NAB.
Microsoft 365 posted on X that they were “rerouting the impacted traffic to alternate systems to alleviate impact in a more expedient fashion” and were “observing a positive trend in service availability.”
Social media users also reported long queues at Australian stores like Woolworths due to payment system failures.
Other sectors affected by the global Microsoft outage included flights, media companies, and stock markets. Major airlines like India’s Akasa, IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet faced operational challenges. US low-cost carriers like Frontier Airlines, Allegiant, and SunCountry also reported issues.
Millions of Windows users worldwide encountered the Blue Screen of Death, causing unexpected computer shutdowns or restarts. In some cases, computers repeatedly restarted, causing users to lose unsaved data and valuable time.
