Adani Aims Vietnam Port Expansion: Indian Conglomerate Targets Trade Opportunities

Billionaire Gautam Adani’s company, Adani Group, is planning to build a new port in Vietnam to take advantage of growing trade opportunities.

Initial Approval from Vietnamese Government

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. has received initial approval from the Vietnamese government to develop a new port in Da Nang. This project, which is still in the early planning stages, will include container terminals and multipurpose berths for various types of cargo, according to Karan Adani, the company’s managing director.

Fourth International Port for Adani Group

This will be Adani Group’s fourth international port, adding to their ports in Haifa (Israel), Colombo (Sri Lanka), and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). Recently, Adani’s new mega port in southern India received its first mother ship, and the company plans to expand this facility quickly to capture more of the international maritime trade, which is currently led by China.

Focus on High-Consumption Markets

“The goal is to make India a maritime hub,” said Karan Adani, Gautam Adani’s elder son. “We are focusing on countries with high manufacturing output or large populations, which will lead to high consumption. We aim to increase export volumes in these countries.”

Expansion of International Operations

Adani Ports is the largest port operator in India. Currently, about 5% of its total volume comes from international operations, but the company wants to increase this to 10% by 2030. Karan Adani mentioned that they are exploring opportunities in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, East Africa, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Vietnam, and Cambodia, as these regions have significant trade links with India.
