Asian Paints’ ₹1,305 Crore Move: Mysuru Plant Capacity Doubled

MUMBAI: Asian Paints has invested ₹1,305 crore to double the production capacity of its Mysuru plant, increasing it from 300,000 KL per year to 600,000 KL per year. With this expansion, the company’s total production capacity now stands at 2,150,000 KL annually.

The Mysuru plant, originally established in 2018, was operating at about 78% of its capacity. The company announced this expansion after receiving approval from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board.

This increase in capacity is intended to support Asian Paints’ medium-term production needs. The company is also boosting production at its other facilities: Ankleshwar, Kasna, and Khandala. Once these expansions are completed, Asian Paints’ total production capacity will rise to 2,270,000 KL per year.

Additionally, Asian Paints is setting up a new water-based paint manufacturing facility in Madhya Pradesh. This new plant will have a capacity of 400,000 KL per year and is expected to be operational by 2028.

The paint industry in India is set for significant growth. According to CRISIL Ratings, the production capacity of the organised paints sector in India is projected to almost double from 2023 to 2027, reaching 7.8 billion litres per year. This expansion involves an investment of about ₹19,000 crore, with a substantial portion coming from major new players in the market. Around 2.4 billion litres of this new capacity are expected to become available this year.

Earlier this year, the Aditya Birla Group introduced its paint brand ‘Birla Opus’. With six manufacturing units and a total capacity of 1,332 million litres, Birla Opus aims to become India’s second-largest paint producer within three years.
