Vodafone Idea Talks with Samsung to Expand 4G and Launch 5G Networks

Vodafone Idea (Vi) is in discussions with Samsung to enhance its current 4G networks and start rolling out 5G services. They have been working together for the past 12-18 months and have already conducted 5G trials in three network circles using Samsung’s virtual Radio Access Network (vRAN) technology.

The trials took place in Chennai, and Vi has also used Samsung’s telecom infrastructure in Karnataka and Bihar to meet the minimum rollout requirements for the 5G spectrum they purchased in the 2022 auctions. These trials used a non-standalone vRAN setup.

Currently, Vi has not yet launched its 5G networks, unlike its competitors Airtel and Jio, which are close to completing their nationwide rollouts.

Jagbir Singh, the Chief Technical Officer at Vi, said, “We are proud to show our leadership in next-generation radio solutions (vRAN), which can offer a better experience to our customers at a lower cost. This vRAN deployment, achieved through Samsung’s innovation and our joint technological strategies, aligns with our technology transformation plan and vendor ecosystem. We believe hybrid architecture will play a significant role in enhancing network capabilities.”

Vi plans to continue working with Samsung on vRAN solutions, using cloud-based benefits and combining them with traditional RAN deployments to roll out 5G networks and improve overall performance and customer experience.
